Janet clearly stated that she wanted nothing to do with the child, that she did not recognize her, and that she even wanted to have a lawyer write a statement that said that she had no legal custody rights or anything toward this child (To which the lawyer stated, perhaps wrongly, that she already did not have any such custody rights).And it is only as the papers were being filled up for the divorce that she suddenly had a complete change of mind, for whatever reason, and wanted custody.
